The Department of Civil Engineering (DTS) was founded on September 10 1960 and is one of the oldest study programs at the Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University. In its first academic year, the Civil Engineering Department was managed by part-time lecturers from the Ministry of Public Works. Because it was difficult to find lecturers, in 1964 several senior students were appointed as assistant lecturers. At that time, lectures were held at the Baraya Campus.
Since the Department of Civil Engineering graduated its first alumni in September 1968, part-time lecturers have gradually been replaced by permanent lecturers. Furthermore, this permanent lecturer manages DTS but still with the help of assistant lecturers and several staff from various related agencies in Makassar.
The 1970s were difficult times because in a situation where there was still a shortage of lecturers, several teaching assistants switched professions to other companies or agencies. However, with an indefatigable spirit, the department management gradually equipped laboratory equipment and trained laboratory assistants to ITB and UGM. So since 1978, students no longer have to go to ITB to carry out soil mechanics and hydraulics practicums.
The 1980s period can be said to be a decade of development. Since this decade, DTS has gradually developed itself. In 1985, DTS occupied a new campus in Tamalanrea. At the same time, the procurement of new equipment in the laboratory was also carried out. Apart from that, the recruitment of new lecturers was carried out to respond to the high interest in students registering at DTS. With the use of these new facilities, in 2000, DTS opened a Master’s program in Civil Engineering.
In 2001 – 2005, DTS carried out major developments again. DTS received funding assistance from the Asian Development Bank through the Technological and Professional Skill Development Sector Project. With this funding, DTS updated laboratory equipment and provided scholarships for 8 lecturers to continue their education at master’s and doctoral levels. With this update, in 2009 DTS organized a Civil Engineering Doctoral program.
The Faculty of Engineering built the Gowa campus in 2013 with funding from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. DTS used this funding to renew laboratory equipment and send 12 lecturers to Japan for doctoral and postdoc programs. Then DTS moved to the Gowa Campus in 2016.
Now, the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Study Programs have been accredited by BAN-DIKTI with an A accreditation title. Then in 2017, the Undergraduate Study Program received Quality Assurance certification from the Asean University Network (AUN- QA). Apart from that, the Undergraduate Study Program is in the international accreditation process ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).
